Next-Generation Web Hosting Solution by Hostinger: Magic in Simplicity
Your hosting service can have a ripple effect on your online success. First, its price needs to be accessible, allowing you to bring your ideas to life. But it can’t come at the cost of hosting quality – with a reliable web host, your site can get faster, stay online 24/7, and bring in more traffic and sales.
Hostinger’s Research and Development team has been hard at work to bring you a next-generation web hosting solution. This prototype will be available for WordPress clients, providing even better performance at an affordable cost.
The Idea Behind the Innovation
Our goal is to improve four components of web hosting:
- Uptime – providing a highly available solution resilient to scaling, hardware failure, and maintenance time.
- Speed – optimizing the speed of account creation, page loading time, and data transfer.
- Simplicity – reducing moving parts and using only tried-and-true solutions.
- Base price – keeping costs low and making the solution available for all customers.
Developing new hosting technology requires a lot of time and resources. Most providers wouldn’t do this, especially when they can buy third-party solutions to build their product.
Fortunately, we’ve figured out an efficient way to innovate without starting from the ground up.
There are plenty of great micro solutions for containerization, database systems, proxies, caches, and accelerators. We’ve identified which aspects of each system are best and put them together in this new next-generation architecture.
The Technology We Came Up With
Our new web hosting solution will use separate units for different roles:
- Management nodes cluster for APIs and helper systems.
- Compute nodes cluster for containers and filesystem.
- Database nodes cluster.
With this architecture, your WordPress site will be much more resistant to system failures. It ensures high availability, even when individual servers go offline. The nodes inside the cluster work interchangeably to ensure maximum uptime.
The system itself utilizes lightweight containers, a distributed filesystem (based on CephFS), and a custom-built Nginx web server that features:
- Optimized Zlib compression, 22-29% faster than the default.
- Brotli data compression support.
- Custom performance patches.
Combining these technologies and the new architecture results in top-performing web hosting with high uptime.
What Difference Will the Next-Generation Solution Make?
We’ve put this new tech stack to the test to see how it improves website performance. We set up a micro-scale buildout using 16 Intel NUC computers to imitate a data center cabinet with servers.
We conducted tests using production websites of different sizes to compare how they perform with the new solution against our current LiteSpeed-based WordPress hosting.
The result? The websites loaded faster on the new tech stack – scoring 99-100 on PageSpeed Insights without cache enabled. With the cache active, they consistently scored 100.
For comparison, the test sites set up on our current hosting were already optimized to the max – with LiteSpeed plugin tweaks, CSS/JS minification, and other file compressions. And yet, their PageSpeed Insights score was not as high.
When Will This New Tech Stack Be Available?
The next-generation web hosting is in the works and will be released as a beta version in a specially-crafted WordPress web hosting offer. We aim to keep the price the same as our current plans to provide you with more benefits without having to pay extra.
In the meantime, existing clients won’t be affected by the changes and can use our services as usual.
Do look forward to future announcements!
